1. TASK INFORMATION:
a) In part 2 there is a text with eight gaps (plus one example) where words
have been removed. You write one word in each gap and your spelling must be
correct.
b) The open cloze tests your knowledge of language structures and your understanding
of the text. The missing words are
grammar words rather than vocabulary items. The words you will need are usually
one of these types: prepositions, connectors, auxiliary, modal or other basic
verbs, determiners or articles, pronouns, basic adverbs such as too, enough,
more or not.
c) The answer will always be a single word. Remember that contractions
count as two words.
d) Sometimes there may be more than one possible answer and, if this is the
case, the mark scheme allows for it but only write one of them.
2. ACTION PLAN
a) Look at the title and the example.
b) Read through the text and think about what it means before answering the
questions.
c) Look at the words either side of the gap for more clues.
d) For each gap, look at the context and decide what kind of word is needed
( an article, pronoun, preposition, etc )
e) Do the questions you can answer easily first. Then, go back the more
difficult gaps.
f) Check you have spelt all the words correctly.
g) When you have filled in the gaps, read through the whole text to check
it makes sense before transferring your answers to the answer sheet.
